Case Study: Retaining Wall Waterproofing Using Torch-On
Location: Cotswold, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
Project: Waterproofing Cinema Retaining Walls
Issue: A new cinema development in Cotswold required a robust waterproofing system for its retaining walls to prevent moisture infiltration. Given that retaining walls are prone to water pressure and damp migration, a long-lasting and effective waterproofing solution was necessary to ensure structural integrity.
Overview:
Retaining walls play a crucial role in supporting structures and preventing soil erosion. However, improper retaining wall waterproofing can lead to serious issues such as water ingress, dampness, and eventual structural damage. The project required a high-performance waterproofing system that would provide long-term protection with minimal maintenance.
Problem Diagnosis:
The primary challenge in this project was ensuring the retaining walls remained completely waterproofed to prevent moisture penetration. If not properly sealed, water could migrate through the walls, leading to deterioration, mold growth, and increased maintenance costs. The solution needed to be durable, capable of withstanding hydrostatic pressure, and effective in eliminating water infiltration risks.
Solution Implementation:
Target Roofing & Waterproofing applied a 4mm torch-on waterproofing system, which involves heat-fusing a specialized waterproofing membrane onto the retaining wall surface. This process ensures a seamless, watertight layer that adheres firmly to the wall, blocking any moisture or dampness.
The key steps included:
- Surface Preparation: Cleaning and priming the retaining walls to ensure optimal adhesion.
- Torch-On Membrane Application: Using a 4mm modified bitumen membrane, heated and bonded directly onto the wall surface.
- Seam Sealing: Ensuring all overlaps and joints were properly sealed to eliminate any potential weak points.
- Protection Layer: Installing a stone protection or drainage layer at the base of the wall to further manage water pressure and prevent damage to the waterproofing system.
The torch-on waterproofing system provides a 10-year guarantee, ensuring long-term reliability. When correctly applied at the construction stage, this solution eliminates the need for future waterproofing maintenance.
Outcome:
The retaining walls of the new cinema were successfully waterproofed with a durable, seamless torch-on system. The application ensures zero water penetration, protecting the structure from damp-related damage. Additionally, by implementing a drainage layer, the risk of hydrostatic pressure against the wall has been significantly reduced.
