Case Study: Timber Roof Repair and Borer Infestation Treatment in Durban’s Borer Belt

Location: Morningside, Durban, KwaZulu-Natal

Project: Repair and replacement of borer-infested timber under residential eaves and trusses

Issue: Borer beetle infestation leading to structural degradation of exposed roof timbers

Overview:

A homeowner in Morningside, Durban, approached Target Roofing & Waterproofing after discovering visible timber damage beneath the roof eaves. The property is located within what’s commonly referred to as Durban’s “borer belt”—a high-risk zone for timber infestations due to the humid coastal climate.

Problem Diagnosis:

Our site inspection revealed widespread damage caused by wood borers in several sections of the exposed rafters, fascia boards, and support beams. The infestation had compromised both the structural integrity and visual condition of the roofline. Immediate intervention was needed to prevent further decay and ensure occupant safety.

Solution Implementation:

  1. Timber Removal and Replacement:
We carefully cut out all affected timber components, replacing them with treated, high-durability timber to ensure longevity and structural strength.
  2. Structural Reinforcement:
Where necessary, roof trusses and support elements were replaced or reinforced to restore the roof’s stability and performance.
  3. Pest Management Partnership:
In coordination with licensed entomologists, we facilitated on-site testing and professional spraying to neutralize any active borer activity and protect the newly installed timber from future infestations.
  4. Preventative Treatment:
All exposed timber was treated with a high-grade insecticidal preservative to fortify it against ongoing threats in the coastal climate.

    Outcome:

The roof was restored to full integrity with no visible signs of infestation. The client gained peace of mind knowing their roof is now protected with durable materials and proactive pest control measures. Follow-up inspections were scheduled to monitor long-term effectiveness.
